The Transportation System of Ohio consists of roadways, airways, railways and waterways. These are the lifelines for extensive passenger travel and cargo/freight transportation and provide vast intercity and interstate connectivity. The majority of the roads, rail systems and water ways are owned and maintained by the state government but some are private or federal entity. The Ohio Department of Transportation ( ODOT ) is actively working to uplift the transportation system and ease the traffic and congestion in the state. It maintains and manages all numbered highways. ODOT is involved in the planning, building and maintenance of the transportation infrastructure within the state of Ohio.
Some of the major Interstate Highways in Ohio:
I-70: It passes through the following counties: Franklin, Guernsey, Madison, Montgomery, Preble, Clark, Fairfield, Licking, Muskingum, and Belmont.
I-71: It begins from Cleveland and intersects at I-270 of Columbus before finally exiting at Cincinnati.
I- 74 : It starts from the Indiana border before exiting at the Cincinnati.
I-75: It runs from Cincinnati to Toledo before entering in Kentucky. It passes through Miami Valley before crossing into Michigan.
I-76: It starts from Cleveland and exits in Pennsylvania state line south of Youngstown.
I-77: It starts from Cleveland and passes through Akron before splitting again in southeastern Ohio. It also passes through West Virginia and North Carolina making it a major part of US Route 21.
I-80: It passes through most of the North of Ohio. It also provide a shortcut through northern Pennsylvania that provides access to New York City.

ODOT has invested $98 million on bicycle and pedestrian routes across the states since 1992. Today, Ohio has more than 3,000 miles of designated bike paths used by an estimated 4 million bicycle owners

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is a division of U.S. Department of Transportation (US DOT) and it handles cases of DOT and ICC registration numbers and safety issues and at the state level, these cases are handles by Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO)'s Transportation Department.

FMCSA works on improving the safety of lives, buses and trucks. Their mission is to reduce injuries, crashes and fatalities involving large trucks and buses. FMCSA is a division of U.S. Department of Transportation (US DOT). Ohio Rail Transportation
Ohio has 35 railroad companies operating the complete Rail Transportation and 5,484 miles of tracks operated. Ohio is 5th in the Nation with 8,329 freight railroad employees ($500 million in wages in Ohio). In 2005, freight railroads handled 315 million tons and 6.8 million rail cars in Ohio

Ohio Air Transportation
The civil aviation sector of Ohio has contributed much to the passenger and cargo transportation of the state. Majority of the airports are owned by the government but there are also few private airports. The Federal Aviation Administration authorizes and oversees all flight operations in Ohio. Some major airports which serve an integral part of the commercial operations include Port Columbus International Airport, Dayton International Airport, Akron-Canton Airport and Burke Lakefront Airport.
